Meet The Man Who Lives In An Airplane Home

Can you imagine going for a walk in the woods when you suddenly find an airplane sitting right in front of you? When that happens, we’re sure you would be astounded by the discovery. Maybe you will even start wondering if there was a plane collision had taken place in the area. You may even begin wondering if you have walked into an old plane junkyard. However, there is no need to panic if you happen to be in Hillsboro, Oregon. In all likelihood, it simply means you have found the not-so-humble abode of a man called Bruce Campbell.

Campbell is definitely not the first or only person to have carved his home from an object intended for an entirely different purpose. Nope, there are plenty of people out there who have fashioned some rather bizarre homes as well. Homes on boats and cars might no longer sound all that crazy since we see them all the time. However, other people have resorted to using stranger things to fashion a home for themselves.

In numerous cultures around the globe, it is considered normal to make a living space in and within trees. Meanwhile, other people have decided to use building materials such as bricks, stone, straw, and mud. However, we have to admit that this is the first time we have heard of an airplane home.

Mind you, acquiring an airplane and then converting it into a house was definitely not easy for Bruce Campbell. The man in question had to go through various obstacles in the process. Aside from the legal requirements that surrounded the undertaking, it must have been exhausting to bring the huge aircraft to his neck of the woods. It might have even been more challenging to convert a Boeing 727 into a place that could serve as his own home! After all, an airplane was simply not made in a way that will make it easy to have a kitchen, living room, or bedroom. The thing you need to know, however, is that he is no ordinary man.

Bruce was actually an electrical engineer who has since gone into retirement. He is an inventive man, though that’s no surprise as you have to be one in order to upcycle something like a plane! He believes that airplanes hold more potential than their original use. He has a great imagination so he decided that he would save one from its scrap metal fate. Instead, Bruce took a piece of land and brought an airplane there to create one of the most unique homes on the planet. Let us now take a look at his journey!

Creative Vision

Bruce Campbell might now be 64 years old, though the retired electrical engineer still has his creative vision intact. When he was a twenty-something, he purchased a 10-acre parcel of land in Hillsboro, Oregon for the price of $23,000! It was deep in the forest but he already had a clear idea what to do with it.

Creative Vision

From A Young Age

From an early age, Bruce was already in the habit of tinkering with various materials and things to turn them into new objects. Initially, his plan for the land was to construct a home using several freight vans. In the beginning, he thought that this was a solid, innovative, and wonderful plan. However, things began to change when he heard about the home someone else built.

A More Interesting Idea

Nearly two decades later, he got wind of the story of a Mississippi hairdresser named Joanne Ussery. She bought a Boeing 727 airliner and converted it into her own home. She once had a regular house but unfortunately, it burned down in a fire. She therefore decided to make a functional airplane home located right beside a serene lake.

Starting Small

At that point, Bruce was already in the middle of setting his plan of a freight van home into motion. However, he started to find the idea of using a huge plane more appealing than his original plan. Among other things, he thought that it would be a lot more fun and he was against the idea of scraping airplanes for metal. Luckily, he had no problem when it came to space as his land was 10 acres in size! The next issue now is coming up with the money to buy and deliver a plane to his backyard.

Purchasing An Airliner

In 1999, Bruce Campbell bought himself a Boeing 727 jetliner. He got it for $100,000 courtesy of Olympic Airways, an airline based in Greece. After acquiring the airplane, the next task was to take the huge aircraft to his neck of the woods.

Moving The Plane

Interestingly, the most challenging part of the entire project ended up being the transportation of the airplane from Athens to Oregon. The arrangement and delivery of the airplane, along with several other project details, set him back by yet another $120,000. At this point, he had already spent $220,000 on the project. Regardless, Bruce Campbell was sure that he would be able to get the bang for his buck in numerous ways. In fact, he got his money’s worth in more ways than he expected.

Massive Relocation

He was an industrious man so it comes as no surprise that he was thrilled to begin working on the project. Not only was it a new undertaking, but it was also a large one in more ways than one! Before anything else, however, he needed to take the Boeing into his backyard. The task at hand required the deconstruction of the wings so that it would be easier to move to the secluded Oregon forest.

His Own Land

A lot of people had been wondering about the legalities of the project, though it turned out that it was barely an issue. Bruce was free to bring a plane in there since the land was his property. We have to say that he definitely had everything in check!

Building Wings

Several men had to take apart the wings in a way that Bruce could be able to reinstall everything once the airliner had been plonked onto his land. He decided to begin his project as a simple “work in progress”. As you might have already guessed, it turned out morphing into something else after numerous years of hard work and innovation.

New Insight

In the beginning, he only saw it as a fun undertaking and he did not have a clear plan on how to go about it. However, he knew that he wanted to upcycle the Boeing 727 in any way he could. It is his belief that jetliners could be turned into great homes instead of simply being “mindlessly scrapped”. We have to say that we agree with him on this!

Living On The Side

For a couple of years, Campbell had worked on the fuselage and resided in the freight vans nearby. It could not have been easy staying there, but don’t forget that he was a man on a mission. He was not about to give up just yet! However, he experienced another problem at this point.

Unexpected Trouble

After living this way for some time, the van suffered a mice infestation. Because of this, he had to stay in the airliner instead despite the lack of building permit. However, the new living arrangements gave him the opportunity to better understand the space. It’s pretty difficult to imagine that it was once a fully-functional passenger plane!

Unexpected Trouble1

Converging Of Two Worlds

When he was interviewed by Mirror, Bruce Campbell was not shy about discussing his vision for the plane. He declared, “Shredding a beautiful and scintillating jetliner is a tragedy in waste and a profound failure of human imagination.” Moreover, he talked about how he did not find anything unnatural about the idea of living in a plane in the woods. He was under the strong belief that airplanes possess “engineering grace unmatched by any other structures people can live within.”

Envisioning

He did not initially draw up a plan for the interior of the Boeing 727, though moving in made him come to several realizations. When he talked about his vision with Business Insider, Bruce Campbell told them, “Next time you’re in a jetliner, close your eyes for a moment and remove all the seats, all the other people from your mind.” He continued by saying, “Then open your eyes with that vision and consider the expanse of the living room. It’s a good environment; it really is.”

The Debut

Before he debuted his innovative aircraft home, Bruce Campbell had to clean the exterior of the fuselage with the aid of a high-pressure water spray. He explained to the Daily Mail that it is actually more complicated than it looks. The task took him about four days to finish!

Maintenance And All That Jazz

Every two years, he has to wash the exterior of the Boeing 727. Bruce Campbell needs to use a ladder in order to access the engine and the top portion of the plane. It was pretty dangerous to do this as he was in danger of falling down should the hose swing the wrong way. The possibility actually makes him a little nervous. However, you will see why he continues to do this when you take a look at the result of his hard work.

Unconventional Home

Campbell has talked about how it should be the fate of every plane to be converted into an “aerospace class castle” that is perfect for daily living and retirement. When he was interviewed by the Daily Mail, he said, “If a conventional home is a legacy age family Chevy or Ford, an airliner is a fresh new Tesla or Porsche Carrera.”

Living In A Castle

We can definitely see the similarities between the airplane home and a castle. After all, he adorned the passenger plane with concrete pillars and made a driveway for it. If anyone were passing by the area, they would likely not mistake it for a crashed plane. With the work that he has put into it, you will definitely be able to tell that it was not an ordinary airliner!

Toss Or Keep

Campbell has worked hard to make use of the equipment that came with the plane, though he chose to leave the instruments and controls in the cockpit as they were. Regardless, he decided to give the interior an update by restoring and modifying the space to make it better suited for daily living.

Work In Progress

For Campbell, his home remains a work in progress even though he succeeded in making it a functional home. He might have made the shower by himself, though he also restored various original features of the plane. The list includes LED lighting, the flight stairs, the lavatory, and even a portion of the original seating. We bet you’re eager to see what the space looks like now!

Opening His Home To Others

Whenever people come to visit the airliner home, they need to use the fold-down stairwell that originally came with the aircraft. That’s right, you need to enter it in the same way that you would if you were about to board a regular plane on the airport tarmac.

Fine Details

It definitely seems like Bruce Campbell had everything under control down to the smallest detail. In the front area of the airplane, you will find a shoe rack loaded with plenty of slippers. These are meant for visitors as Bruce Campbell prefers guests to roam the aircraft in socks and slippers. He decided to do this in order to maintain the cleanliness of the plane. We’re sure it’s not easy to keep the place pristine!

Number 1 Rule

He was quick to notice that the glass floor got dirty easily thanks to the forest surrounding the plane. This is the reason why he decided to enforce his sock and slipper rule. He might live alone in the woods, though that does not mean he can’t take pride in his own home!

What He Needs

There might be a lot of space on the Boeing 727, though Bruce Campbell is the type of person who prefers a modest lifestyle. In fact, he only sleeps on his futon, makes food with a microwave and toaster oven, and comes up with makeshift equipment. His diet is also primarily made of cereal and canned food!

Cool Shower

The original aircraft actually came with two functional lavatories, though we daresay that the best feature has to be the shower he constructed on his own. Moreover, he needed to get running water and electricity on the plane in order to use it. This is how he ended up digging a trench to reroute the power lines!

Getting Connected

He had to connect an old cable to an old meter base in order to provide electricity to his home. After this, he had to install a circuit breaker cabinet. He also needed to add tubing, an extra water pipe, and a cable for telecom. These all work together to give him clean water for his daily hygiene needs.

The Engineer

It would not be unusual to find Campbell inside the plane practically the whole day. In all likelihood, you will catch him working on his computer by his workstation. Here, he comes up with new plans to improve the design of his home. He actually enjoys planning his next project. He explained to the Daily Mail, “I think most people are nerds in their hearts in some measure. The point is to have fun.”

Upcycling Is The Way

When he was interviewed by the Daily Mail, he was asked why he had such a strong belief in upcycling an aircraft and turning it into a home. He answered the question by emphasizing the environmental benefits that come with the endeavor. He also talked about the durability and sturdiness of airplanes that will allow them to survive storms and earthquakes.

The Boeing 727 can do more than just survive a storm, however. Among other things, airplanes are apparently easy to maintain and clean. “Their interior is easy to keep immaculately clean because they are sealed pressure canisters. They could last for centuries,” he explained. He strongly believes that upcycling planes would be more common once people realize its environmental benefits.

Not Going Hungry

As you can see here, his kitchenette is stocked with just about everything he will ever need. Among other things, he has condiments, supplies, and produce! Sure, it would be a challenge to cook up gourmet food. However, it doesn’t matter to him as he prefers filling up his tech soul than his stomach. He has no problem cooking up basic meals as the kitchen is equipped with running water, a toaster, and a microwave. At least he gets to eat better food than the meals most airlines serve!

Built To Last

Campbell has discussed the benefits of living in an aircraft, primarily the engineering aspect of it. He has talked about how ideal it is to live somewhere made of strong metal. He told Business Insider, “Wood is, in my view, a terrible building material. It biodegrades – it’s termite chow and microbe chow. Or it’s firewood; depends upon which happens first.” Well, when you put it that way…

Strength Or Ergonomics?

He strongly believes that the traditional home is actually inferior to his own since they normally prioritize ergonomics over strength. Bruce Campbell said, “To me it makes no sense at all to destroy the finest structures available and then turn around and build homes out of materials which are fundamentally little better than pressed cardboard, using ancient and inferior design and building methods.”

Here And There

Interestingly, Bruce Campbell does not stay in his airliner home the entire year. He spends half of it in Japan as he likes to enjoy a change of scenery every now and then. That is correct – he lives in a completely different environment for six months. Whenever he stays in Japan, he continues to work on various ideas and projects in order to stay busy. However, there is one particular project that he has been working on… Do you have any idea what it could possibly be?

Another Project

You guessed that right. Campbell has been planning on replicating the project, though he plans on doing it in Japan with the use of a larger Boeing-747. He plans on buying a retired unit that he can turn into another unique abode during the time he resides in Japan. He has already done what he could to help the environment in his home country so it is only natural that he wants to do it again in his other home. He has already worked on one repurposed plane so we bet things will be easier for him this time around.

Opening Minds

Campbell believes that it is his life’s purpose to make a positive and significant impact on the world for the greater good of humanity and the environment. He is a man constantly driven by innovation and this likely has something to do with his background in electrical engineering. Campbell continues to be thrilled about the idea of recycling airplanes. It is a niche that he wants to consider his own. As he stands with his airplane home, he declared, “My goal is to change humanity’s behavior in this little niche.”

As a matter of fact, Campbell is one of several people from all over the world who has managed to recycle airliners and convert it into a functional living space. Martin Todd of the Aircraft Fleet Recycling Association explains how the group “is happy to see aircraft fuselages re-purposed in a range of creative ways. We would want them to be recovered and to be re-used in an environmentally sustainable fashion.”

The organization, more commonly known as AFRA, directs its attention on the promotion of sustainable aircraft and engines practices. A different spokesperson explains that about 1,200 to 1,800 units will be deconstructed in the next three years. Meanwhile, 500 to 600 other aircraft will be annually retired in the following twenty years! If everyone follows in Bruce Campbell’s footsteps, those digits would translate to a large number of homes.

The Woods Of Hillsboro

Campbell chose to assemble the Boeing 727 airplane home in the woods of Hillsboro for several simple reasons. Let’s start by talking about the job offer he received to work in the area after his graduation back in the 70s. Next, he enjoys the greenery of the area. In fact, he wrote this on his website: “I like the area and it’s very green and Oregon is a little independent-minded which appealed to me. It’s a country setting, it’s very nice. It’s more than enough for the aircraft.”

This particular engineer chose to get a home at a later period in his life. He talked about this in detail with the Daily Mail. According to him, he did not like the idea of getting a mortgage since it would restrict him in the financial sense of the word. When he finally had the money for a home, he had a different idea in mind. He explained, “I had stopped thinking in provincial terms and I had thought like a free bird engineer.”

Bruce Campbell does not only open his home to curious guests. He also hosts different events from time to time! In fact, the airplane served as the venue of a unique show just this June 30 to July 3. The Tokyo-based musician Pomily held a concert in the grass right in front of the right wing of the Boeing 727. His website advertised the show to be “A new concert option: Superb music rendered from a wing of a scintillating aerospace home” and this came with several guidelines for the guests. The instructions included advising guests to wear comfortable countryside clothing and tennis or running shoes. Of course, he did not forget to ask guests to put on slippers if they wanted to check out his home!

Living The Bachelor Life

He might live a modest life, though it does not seem like Bruce Campbell is craving for anything else. He is satisfied with his life on his makeshift bachelor pad and he is in no hurry to change things. It seems like he is not keen on the idea of pursuing love anyway. “I will not marry and will not generate kids. I’m 68 so it’s too late anyway, but I simply never desired to be married or have kids. I enjoy romance and love and I indulge in it as much as civilization will allow,” he informed the Daily Mail.

He adores living in his unique abode and it is not that surprising to hear that he does not care much about traditional ideas like marriage and mortgage. However, you will be glad to learn that he is close to his neighbors who all support and believe in his vision. Moreover, we are happy that his ambition was never held back by his modest lifestyle. Let us now take a look at how his other project is going.

As we have previously said, Bruce Campbell splits his time between living in the Boeing 727 in Oregon and residing in Japan. Campbell plans on buying a piece of land in the Asian country and hopes to make another airplane home. He is planning on purchasing a bigger aircraft in the form of a Boeing 747-400.

Campbell truly enjoys the thrill he gets whenever he recycles airplanes and he hopes that others will feel the same way after touring his plane and attending the events he hosts. He has explained on his website that it is his goal to “spark a renaissance of thought about how to utilize this remarkable resource”. Campbell remains hopeful that other individuals will begin crafting their own airplane homes.

Helping The Community

This talented engineer had plans of starting the second aircraft home project during the early part of the year. He decided to accomplish this somewhere in Kyushu Island. He chose to do this by the coast as he wants it to serve as a sanctuary of sorts for the local community as well. His vision is to transform the airliner into a lifeboat in case of a tsunami threat in the area! He wants the public to know that planes were made to last for centuries and that these vehicles can withstand the most terrible conditions you can think of thanks to its sealed pressure technology.

Boeing 727-400

The airplane that Bruce Campbell decided to use for his Oregon airplane home is none other than a Boeing 727-400 unit. This model was manufactured by Boeing from 1960 until 1984 as a passenger plane for short and medium-length flights. The reason behind this is because this airliner could use shorter runways found at smaller airports.

The airplane is actually the only model Boeing Commercial Airplanes created with a total of three engines. The seating capacity is generally anywhere from 149 to 189 passengers. Delta Air Lines served as the last major U.S. carrier to have used it and they retired their last Boeing 727 back in April 2003. Meanwhile, Northwest Airlines decided to pull the plug on their Boeing 727 units in June 2003. These days, Iran Aseman Airlines is the only carrier in the world that still uses Boeing 727-200 units for passenger flights.

A Bleak Past

Did you know that the Boeing 727 carries a fascinating past? Before Campbell bought it and converted it into his home, the aircraft was used to take different people to various destinations. However, not many passenger planes can brag that it transported the dead body of a famous person!

Can you believe that what is now Campbell’s abode once brought back the cadaver of Aristotle Onassis? The Greek tycoon was flown from France to Greece on March 15, 1975 aboard this steel bird after he died of respiratory failure. Moreover, the socialite and former FLOTUS Jackie Kennedy Onassis also boarded the plane to accompany the body of her longtime friend and second husband. That’s pretty impressive if you ask us!
