The penny test is fairly simple, but many drivers do not feel confident that the test will be completed or the results will be interpreted. Turn the penny upside down with Lincoln’s head facing you to test your steps. Insert the coin into your tire tread until the rubber at the bottom of the groove is touched by the top of the coin. The top of Lincoln’s head will disappear on a tire with an adequate tread. If you can see the whole head of Lincoln, the tread has been worn too low.
